The 80c196 appeared in 1985, and was followed in 1988 by the 80c196KB and in 1990 by the 80c196KC.
Depending of various applications he is described sometimes as a Controller ( Ex : on many H.D boards ) and sometimes as a CPU
( Ex : On the SAMI midi converter notice).
We can consider it is a real CPU ( CHMOS technology ), because he is in fact an enchanced 80186 with 80286 instructions set.
